Seventh Day Adventists have two distinct characteristics that make them different from the rest of Christianity. 1. Sabbath observance on the seventh day. (Saturday) 2. An expectation that the end of the world is drawing near. The Adventist movement has its roots in the 19th-century "Millerite movement," which centered on the belief that Jesus would return on October 22, 1844.

On May 21, 1863, the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was established in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Ellen G. White was considered a prophet in the SDA religion. ->

Beliefs

1.

Adventism:

the belief in an imminent, pre-millennial, universally visible second advent, preceded by a time of trouble when the righteous will be persecuted and a false second coming where Satan impersonates the Messiah

Seventh Day Adventist doctrine is rooted in Anabaptist Protestant tradition, and it resembles mainstream orthodox trinitarian Protestant theology. Some of the exeptions are as follows:

2.

Ellen G. White:

recognized as a prophet by the Adventists. Her writings are considered a "source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction"(28 Fundamental Beliefs)

3.

State of the Dead:

<- William Miller is considered the founder of Seventh Day Adventists.

the view that states a deceased person has no conscious form of existence until either the second coming of Jesus (in the case of the good) or after the millennium of Revelation 20 (in the case of the evil)

Practices:

- 24-hour sunset-to-sunset Sabbath commencing Friday evening - church services with emphasis placed on the sermon - adult baptism by full submersion; infants are dedicated rather than baptized, as it is argued that baptism requires consent and moral responsibility - communion four times a year: an open service that includes a foot-washing ceremony and consumption of the Lord's Supper - no consumption of pork, shellfish, and other foods described as "unclean" in Leviticus; alcohol and tobacco are also prohibited
